New Year, Same Me?

Everywhere I’ve looked the past few days, I keep seeing Instagram captions or tweets or Facebook statuses saying, “new year, new me!”. And don’t get me wrong, I love the idea behind this and admire people who really want to use this new year to better themselves. But I can’t say that I agree with this movement this year.

In 2017, I found myself. I went to New York City barely knowing a soul and lived there for four months, discovering who I am, what I enjoy, and who I want in my life. I worked two important internships and made connections and bettered my skills in various things. I found worth in myself and for the first time in a long, long time, really learned to love the person who I am.

So if I love who I am, why should I spend this year trying to change that person?

Now please don’t get me wrong, I am far from perfect. I have my faults, just as we all do. There were parts of 2017 that I’m not so happy with. I lost some friends, gained some unnecessary weight, still sometimes find joy in being petty, and my self-confidence could use some work. But working on those things isn’t going to create a “new me”.

I plan to spend 2018 continuing on my path of discovery about myself. I have some incredible opportunities coming up soon and I can’t wait to blossom more as a person. I plan to walk more, eat cleaner, and continue to improve my confidence. I’m constantly trying to better myself, but in no way do I want to form a “new me”.

So take this year and instead of creating a new person, focus on the person you are now. Self-confidence issues? Look in the mirror every morning and say to yourself, “I love you”. Lonely? Reach out to people. Not happy with your grades? Study harder; find a tutor. Slacking on going to the gym? Park your car a little farther from the store; those extra few steps can work wonders.

You are an amazing person. No one who truly cares about you wants you to become a new person. People who love you want to see you focus on being the best version of you that you can be. As Dr. Seuss said, “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You”.

Be the best you that you can be in 2018 and remember that there are so many people out there who love you because you’re you.
